Studio Kids Northwest— Art Camp/Summer 2015
Week #1 - Tangles, Dangles, and Origami
Students will discuss the significance of marks, symbols & signs as a source for inner inspiration while learning foundational forms of Zentangle, a meditative doodle art that is unique & meaningful to each artist. ‘Dangling’ is another form of art that stretches the boundaries of line work with embellishment, emphasizing shape & form. Individual paper tiles are creative plus help develop focus and attention to detail! The line work is mesmer- izing but with the addition of watercolor, gouache pigment, and shading techniques, the intricacies of the art form emerge as a powerful WOW. Day 3, a combination of tangling, dangling and folded-paper Origami adds a nice wrap up to the week!
Week #2 - Lettering, Illumination and Bookmaking
In this age of digital everything, offer your child the opportunity go back in time to see the elegance of beautiful lettering done by hand. Each child will learn to make their own book by hand with their own creative cover using collage, print- making and or paint. Kids will explore different alphabet styles and create their own beautiful letters, using pens and brushes, inks & paints. We will also explore the beauty of illuminated letters. Emphasis will be on expressive lettering, not perfection and each child will go home with a hand-created book.
Week #3 - Animal Menagerie
Mixed Media is the theme this week as wood blocks, hardware materials, and simple hand tools form the basis for artistic assemblage of a favorite animal. Day 2 & 3 feature assemblage of an imaginary animal using a cigar box, collage, paint, plus found objects and “bits & thingy’s” that represent each artist individually. This is a unique experience for a young artist to develop strength of creative voice while using their imagination with- in the expanse of the animal kingdom.
Week #4 - Under the Sea
This week we will be studying Northwest Native American art as our art history segment. Each student will create a paper-mâché hanging sea creature and mask to hang on the wall inspired by our rich local history of Northwest Native American
art. When the creatures are dry, we will paint, collage, and embellish - making the creatures something of each student’s own design. Young artists will proudly bring their creations home to hang in their rooms.
