more about darlene's paintings
Concerto/ watercolor mixed media/ 74x45/ 6000.
A concerto is typically played in three movements. This painting, too, consists of three movements:
I. the Music of the Stars (sound waves)
II. Bubbles in the Milky Way (unknown matter)
III. Terra Stellar Connections (all that we see on earth once came from the stars).
My painting also includes there media: ink, rice paper, and paint. Layer upon layer of media and concept intertwine to reflect the concerto of space.
Starlight Bending #three/ watercolor mixed media/ 29x31/ 1300.
Einstein believed that starlight would be bent by space-time's curvature as it passed by the sun on its way to earth. In 1919 two teams of astronomers proved that indeed it did. This painting is the fruit of my musings on bending light.
Starlight Orchestra/ watercolor mixed media/ 30x22/ 1100.
In some paintings I visually explore an orchestra of inaudible sounds! This painting was inspired by sound waves emanating from a black hole - sounds we can only hear with specialized instruments.
In the evening, the melodies of space, sing to the Earth.
Grace of Space/ watercolor mixed media/ 30x30/ 1800.
Grace: "Elegance or beauty of form, manner or motion" - American Heritage College Dictionary 4th Edition 2004
Starlight Melody/ watercolor mixed media/ 29.5x41.5/ 2400.
In the evening, the melodies of space sing to the earth.
The Blackness of Space/ watercolor mixed media/ 15.5x12/ 650.
In the Blackness of space, dust clouds serve as nurseries for new stars, and dark matter forms a web. This painting reflects the bubbling and interweaving of dark matter through cloud and web.
A Little Starlight Caught/ watercolor mixed media/ 48x38/ 3000.
"The true harvest of my life is intangible - a little stardust caught, a a portion of the rainbow I have clutched." Henry David Thoreau
Novalight/ watercolor mixed media/ 20x16x2/ 500.
This painting captures a waterfall of color and light springing forth from an exploding star.
Quantum Island/ watercolor mixed media/ 30x30x2/ 1200.
Packets of light shimmering inside a quark!
Dark Matters/ watercolor mixed media/ 16x20x2/ 500.
Dark matter is about 25% of the cosmic mass density. My painting meditates on this theme - gravity in the absence of light, invisible attractions and influences made visible only through the resulting movements of light.
Starstruck/ watercolor mixed media/ 47x31/ 2500.
Stars collide in space. Inspired by the rich of atoms, molecules and particles creating excitement and movement, with a cacophonous overlapping of watercolor, rice paper and a print.
