"Like a book, a hand scroll is an intimate object that is held in the hands and ideally viewed by only one or a few people at a time. When the scroll is rolled up, the message or images on it can become secretive and hidden from view. The message becomes timeless because it is hidden. The message can embody a continuing story, because the “long” page is not consigned or limited to a book sized page.
When the scroll is rolled up, the message is ‘closed’ to us, suggesting meaning through the concept of nothingness or emptiness. Emptiness is a Japanese concept that can open the mind up to new potential and creativity. This can create a feeling of balance and simplicity, inviting us to be more meditative and calm.
