jennie de mello e souza biography

My work is rooted in the natural world, where animals exist in a moment of quiet—seemingly unobserved, yet staring back at the viewer. They are poised above the earth, alert but still, suspended between vulnerability and strength. Each piece reflects a tension: the fragility of life and the secret interior of each being, set against a ground that speaks to both decay and renewal. I am drawn to the spaces where life teeters—between breath and stillness, presence and disappearance.
I am a teaching artist and an eternal student; this dual role fuels my curiosity and deepens my practice. Whether in clay or on paper, my work seeks to honor the silent, the unseen, and the precarious beauty of the living world.
Jennie earned her BA in Art and Art History and has studied in the UK, Brazil, and France, including a certificate in Scientific Illustration from the Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris. Jennie teaches high school visual art, and also leads workshops in watercolor and ceramics. She has exhibited widely, including in the annual Edmonds Art Studio Tour.
